Looking over the contours of my life, it is easy to see the misfortunes and tragedies. They are unavoidable. One could easily mistake my family’s lack of material comfort, the scarcity of the dollar and the hardships my mother encountered as a single Black woman raising four children in Brooklyn, New York, as some weighty scarlet letter around her neck, threatening to pull us under. That view would be easy to succumb to, but to focus on that, would mean that one would most likely miss out on the million little miracles, the countless instances of amazing grace that has lifted us above the muck.
